GREGG ALLMAN: THE MUSIC OF MY SOUL
This soaring music documentary traces Gregg Allman’s journey from a
childhood scarred by his father’s murder to the heights of Southern rock
and late-life sobriety, exploring grief, addiction, love, and the racially
charged American South through his transcendent music. Tender and
unsparing, featuring electrifying performances and archival recordings, the
film reveals how Gregg’s unforgettable blend of rock, country and blues
mirrored the music and struggles of his soul.
James Keach is an Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy Award-winning narrative and documentary producer, director and actor. His career spans prestigious scripted television and film, to acclaimed documentary films.
Presently in post-production on the original feature film Sierra Madre starring Kiefer Sutherland, which he produced based on a story he wrote, James produced Walk the Line, for which the Producers’ Guild of America awarded him Motion Picture Producer of the Year. Walk the Line was also nominated for several Academy and Golden Globe awards, winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture and garnering Reese Witherspoon her Academy Award® for Best Actress.
Over the past decade, he has produced a broad range of compelling, acclaimed documentaries. He directed and produced the award-winning documentary feature Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me, which followed the legendary singer’s unprecedented “Goodbye Tour” after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me was nominated for an Academy Award® and won three Grammy® Awards. It was the top-viewed CNN Films documentary ever produced.
He went on to produce David Crosby: Remember My Name, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, which was one of the highest-grossing documentaries of the year. Its broadcast debut was on CNN on New Year’s Day 2020, and it joined Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me as one of CNN’s most viewed films ever. It has been named “Best Music Documentary” by the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, and also garnered a Grammy® for Best Music Film.
Other recent film releases include Turning Point, an extraordinary documentary that follows the quest for the first medication that could treat the underlying processes of Alzheimer’s disease, and HBO’s Linda and the Mockingbirds, which celebrates Mexican music and culture and features music superstars Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne.
He is presently directing and producing Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul, in association with Amblin Entertainment, Five All in the Fifth, and DLP Productions, on the legendary musician and founding member of the Allman Brother’s Band. Other current projects include Taking Care, a documentary on Seth Rogen’s and Lauren Miller Rogen’s efforts to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s following her mother’s struggle with the disease. He is also actively developing documentary series on the LAPD and West Point.
A graduate of Northwestern University and the Yale School of Drama, he received classical training as an actor at the New York Shakespeare Festival and was a founding member of the Body Politic Theater in Chicago.
